Why People of the Global Majority

  • The identifier, global majority, refers to people who are not white British or other white people, including people of Black, Asian, mixed, and other ethnic groups. It's also known as people of the global majority

  • The identifier is important because it's an alternative to terms that are seen as racialized, like ethnic minority and person of color (POC). It is a more accurate representation of the nonwhite people in the world.

  • The identifier includes people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, and indigenous to the global south. People who have been racialized as ethnic minorities. Those whose heritage can be traced back to nations of the Global South.

  • The impact of using the identifier, people of the global majority is based in the power of language. What and how we use words shapes the world around us. The identifier reframes the narrative of majority and minority through a more accurate and representative lens, as well as acknowledges the truth of the world's population.

  • While there are no negative connotations, most people in the Western world do not appreciate being referred to as the ‘minority’ as it implies that they are—or ought to be—less powerful due to being fewer in number. (https://shorturl.at/RKZuv)

  • The term "people of the global majority" was brought to prominence by Rosemary Campbell Stephens, an educator and anti-racist activist of Black African Caribbean heritage. It came about through her work to diversify leadership at London schools. (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c981g43vmmro)

Why Make a donation.

Southern Momentum Publishing House is an author-centered, boutique hybrid publisher dedicated to putting more books written by people of global majority and other underrepresented women writers who write about and for the US South into the literary landscape. Some of the greatest women writers may not be able to fully afford our services, and we would like to help them do so.

You donations will go a long way in helping us reach a wider pool of writers and bring a more representative catalogue of published books to the Southern reader market.
